Microsoft Outlook troubleshooting

On Microsoft Exchange Server programs often use the MAPI interface (Messaging Application Programing Interface) to ensure proper communication between the server and the e-mail clients e.g. Microsoft Outlook. When a program reports an unexpected error related to MAPI (Fig.1), it may suggest that you need to perform a more complicated procedures to find a possible cause of the problem.

However, you should start by this simple solution: delete and create a new profile on Microsoft Exchange Server. There are two options to do that:

If you have Microsoft Outlook installed on the server:

  • go to Start, Control Panel, Mail
  • in the new window click Show Profiles (Fig.2)

  • delete all the profiles
  • click Add and give a name to a new profile

If you don't have Microsoft Outlook installed on the server.

You can use a free program called MfcMapi (you can download it from here). After you download it:

  • open the program
  • click Profile, Show Profiles
  • highlight all the profiles from the list
  • go to Actions, Delete Profile (Fig.3)

  • now, all the profile are gone, so again go to Actions, Create Profile
  • provide a name for the new profile

After you re-create profiles your program should not display any MAPI related errors any more. If it still does, it means the problem is more complicated and requires more troubleshooting.
