Opening attachments in Outlook without the dialog box

Postby amateur5 » Wed Jul 28, 2010 9:56 am

Hi to all,

Does anybody know how can I change the option with attachments? When I want to open attachments in Outlook from the message window, it always asks me to save or open it. Is it possible to change it so attachments are always opened?
I see the option but it is grayed out and I can't change it! Any ideas?

Yes, the option is not accessible because you are not logged in as administrator.
First you need to log in as administrator on the computer or run the Outlook with administrator's rights.
Then, you need to open the attachment and the dialog box with proper options will be accessible. Simply, disable the option and from now on you will not see the dialog box at all.

Yes, all that sounds so simple but I'm not sure how can I do it. How do I check if I am an administrator or have administrator rights?

The simpliest way is to try to run the Outlook with administrator's rights.
Close your Outlook and go to Start Menu. Type Outlook.exe in the Search field. When the search is finished click right mouse button on Outlook.exe and choose Run as Administrator.

Now in the open Outlook when you try to open the attachment you can disable the option "Always ask before opening."

I've found also a more advanced solution by editing the registry keys. You need to identify the file type in this tree: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and then create or change the EditFlags Data value to 00 00 01 00.

Kamilb version is much more safe. Thx

Thx, both of you.

I used the simple version with running the Outlook with Administrator's rights. It worked. Is it possible to switch it back and have the warning window?

Hi to all,

I changed the option, but still I'd like some attachments to have the warning message, just for the safety reason. How can I do? I do not want to have the message for all of them but for some e.g. .exe, or .zip.

If you want to change these settings, go to Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options menu. Look on the File Types tab for the attachment type. Select it, then the Advanced button and add a check to the Confirm after Open option.

Great! Now I can choose the files that are previewed. E.g. PDFs are ok, but not some strange adverts in jpg.
